Eat Lunch with the Judges and Improve Your Practice

Free LunchWho says that there is no free lunch?  On the second Tuesday of every month in Courtroom 15D or 15B at 12:05 PM, lunch is free and the conversation is lively at the Civil Bench Bar meetings.  The Nevada office of Bauman Loewe Witt & Maxwell had the pleasure of sponsoring April’s Civil Bench Bar luncheon allowing attorney Aileen Cohen to speak with the attendees about our firms practice areas and services, including the Trucking, Insurance and Coverage and Bad Faith law blogs.

But food and conversation is only a very small part of what the meetings offer.  Rather, the meetings provide a unique opportunity for the civil bar and the judges to discuss issues, vent frustrations, address questions and gain invaluable insight into the inner workings of the Eighth Judicial District.  Want to know how the judges want to handle a specific issue in the rules?  Ask them during the Bench Bar meeting.  In the alternative, listen up carefully when the judges identify their biggest pet peeves to avoid the next rejected document or confused expression from the bench during your next court appearance.

Additionally, Judge Susan Johnson provides a helpful summary and discussion of the latest Nevada Supreme Court and Nevada Court of Appeals decisions, occasionally in the presence of the trial judge or the appellate court member that issued the decision.

With the changes to the court’s filing and docket research sites, the Court’s Information Technology representative often provides updates about the ongoing roll out.  Thinking you are always the last to know about rule changes?  Attend the Bench Bar meetings and be one of the first to know and get great advice from the judges and your colleagues about how to implement them.  Have a great suggestion to improve a policy or process, share it at the meeting.  Better yet, volunteer for a committee and be one of the people creating change.

About Aileen Cohen

Ms. Cohen is a highly skilled professional in all phases of civil and criminal trials and court appearances, including oral argument in motion and evidentiary hearings. In addition to her courtroom experience, she is well versed at representing her clients’ interests in all forms of alternative dispute resolution (ADR), and administrative hearings.

She practices general civil and complex litigation, primarily in the areas of insurance defense and coverage issues. Ms. Cohen also practices litigation surrounding contractual and administrative issues. “Litigation is not limited strictly to a strictly defined concept of liability. The issues involved in any area of law require just as much focus on discovery and motion practice than a traditional tort or contract action.”

In addition to civil litigation, Ms. Cohen has notable criminal defense experience. Ms. Cohen’s post-conviction research, preparation of legal briefs and oral argument before the Nevada Supreme Court in Burrell v. State of Nevada resulted in the reversal of a life sentence and re-sentencing for her client.

Ms. Cohen successfully obtained summary judgment defending a legal malpractice claim. She also obtained a partial summary judgment that significantly reduced her client’s exposure.

Ms. Cohen is licensed to practice in Nevada and Oregon and has been admitted to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Nevada (1995) and to the Ninth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals (1996). Ms. Cohen is a member of the Southern Nevada Association of Women Attorneys, Las Vegas Defense Lawyers and the Nevada State Bar Animal Law Section.

Ms. Cohen joined attorney Michael C. Mills in the Las Vegas office of BLWM. In addition to her trial and litigation responsibilities, she contributes regularly to the Nevada Law Blogs.
